About Lupus Awareness Month:
Lupus Awareness Month is one of several observances promoted by the Lupus Foundation of America (www.lupus.org) to increase visibility for lupus. The LFA and its chapters designated May as Lupus Awareness Month to incorporate other related events into the observance. The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1,500,000 Americans have a form lupus. This estimate is based on two nationwide polls, which asked respondents if they, or anyone in their immediate household, had ever been diagnosed with lupus. In addition, another poll revealed that 28% of all Americans know someone with lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that, for unknown reasons, causes inflammation and tissue damage to virtually any of the body’s own cells, tissue, and organs – especially the skin, joints, blood, heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain.

Vitamin D Awareness Low
FERNDALE, Wash.—Nearly 64 percent of Americans surveyed are unaware sunscreen hinders the body’s ability to produce vitamin D—a nutrient found beneficial to the immune system, bone strength, colon health, etc. The survey was conducted by WELLESSE, manufacturers of a liquid vitamin D3 supplement. “Vitamin D is important to overall health. People need to be aware sunscreen, even at SPF15, blocks more than 90 percent of the sun’s rays used to produce this vital vitamin,” warned Dr. Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D. of Boston University.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends the public obtain vitamin D from nutritional sources and dietary supplements, and not from unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or indoor tanning devises, as UV radiation is a known risk factor for the development of skin cancer.
For optimal health, regular sunscreen users should consider nutritional vitamin D sources from their diet. But often dietary sources, including mackerel, sardines, salmon or fortified milk are not frequently consumed by Americans in the amounts needed to satisfy the daily allowance.
Vitamin D deficiency has garnered the attention of leading scientific and public health organizations. In April, the Archives of Internal Medicine reported more than 75 percent of Americans have vitamin D insufficiency.2 Last fall, The American Public Health Association called vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency “a major public health concern for both children and adults in the United States.”
Populations who may need additional vitamin D, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements include breastfed infants, people ages 50 and older, those with limited sun exposure, with dark skin, with fat mal-absorption and the obese. UN Uses Post Office Network To Raise Awareness About HIV Prevention
United Nations agencies plan to use hundreds of thousands of post offices around the world as part of a new campaign to raise awareness about HIV prevention at a time when more than 7,400 new infections occur every day. Posters, campaign hand-outs and other materials will be made available to customers and employees of post offices in the hope that the postal network’s broad reach will ensure the message penetrates all age groups. The Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the UNI Global Union announced today that the campaign will be launched initially in 16,000 post offices in seven countries – Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, China, Estonia, Mali and Nigeria.
The campaign will also direct users to a multilingual website with detailed information on HIV prevention – will then be expanded over the next three years, potentially reaching 600,000 post offices around the world and an estimated 5.5 million postal employees. The campaign will culminate with UPU calling on member countries to issue postage stamps about HIV/AIDS in 2011, 30 years after the disease was discovered. UPU Director General Edouard Dayan said in a press release that the post office network was a natural partner for such an awareness program given the vast number of post offices.
“The campaign is a strong example of what one industry can do to help achieve the important Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV by 2015,” Mr. Dayan said.
Michel Sidibé, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, said the high rate of new infections each day means HIV prevention efforts must be stepped up.
“The postal network has an extremely wide outreach: it is open to everyone from the young to the old and is an excellent and innovative way to raise awareness about how to prevent HIV,” he said.
In one of the seven pioneer countries, Cameroon, the country’s postal operator has never participated in a health awareness campaign before. About 5 per cent of Cameroonians aged between 15 and 49 have HIV.
“Raising awareness on HIV is crucial,” said Abraham Sizimboue, the acting Director General of Campost. “HIV touches the lives of a very large part of our population so we are very pleased to be running such an important campaign in our post offices here.” (www.un.org)
Support HIV Awareness !
The National Autism Association (NAA) along with 12 other organizations launched a campaign this week to spur letter writing and raise awareness about dangerous restraint and seclusion practices in schools. The initiative comes on the heels of the May 19th GAO Report that revealed no federal laws regulating restraint and seclusion in schools, no laws in 19 states, and “widely divergent” laws in remaining states.
It also investigated cases where two children died from “mechanical compression to the chest” and being “smothered to death,” one died from restraint following a seizure, another died from hanging himself in a seclusion room. Other cases included a four-year-old girl who was tied to a chair and abused, five children who were duct-taped to their desks, and a ten-year-old boy who was put in a seclusion room “75 times over a 6-month period for hours at a time for offenses such as whistling, slouching and hand-waving.”
The report only adds to stories around the country of disabled children being handcuffed, locked in closets and bathrooms, and restrained with chemicals and lemon spray. “These are essentially torture tactics that are outlawed for terrorists, but children with autism and other disabilities have no federal regulations in place protecting them,” says Wendy Fournier of NAA. “We’re not speaking of all teachers – but we do need to protect children from the ones who are putting them in danger.”
This week, the group launched an ad campaign with headlines that called handcuffs “the new circle time, and “when our disabled children can’t figure out how to sit still, more schools are showing them the ropes.” They’re asking lawmakers to ban dangerous restraint and seclusion and enforce proper training, ample reporting, and better monitoring.
Empowering parents is also key. “Thanks to organizations like APRAIS and Families Against Restraint and Seclusion, parents are armed with information and can download a sample ‘no consent’ form to give to their schools,” says Rita Shreffler of NAA.
