Autism Awareness Month is here and April 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day! RocknBauble.etsy.com supports Autism Awareness all year long with a 10 percent donation from the proceeds of its Handmade Autism Awareness Fashion Jewelry.

RocknBauble.com will support Autism Awareness Month by donating 10 percent of the proceeds from its dazzling Autism Awareness jewelry line to ASGO. We typically donate to ASGO being a member but you can advise your charity or society of choice when purchasing RocknBauble autism jewelry. High quality handmade Autism Awareness bracelets, necklaces, earrings and book thongs are available and being offered through the RocknBauble storefront located on ETSY.com (www.RocknBauble.Etsy.com). This months featured necklace is a handcrafted Dichroic Glass puzzle piece pendant on an 18 in sterling silver box chain. The Puzzle piece measures approx. 3/4 inch x 3/4 inches, and is signed by the artist on the back and includes a hand decorated cotton filled gift box. The necklaces are available with several different designs all unique unto themselves. “I am extremely excited to promote autism awareness with special autism jewelry creations and donations throughout the year to support our autistic community,” states Andi Vogel (RocknBauble Jewelry Artist). Jewelry for any awareness color or cause is also available with a percentage of the proceeds going to the cause the particular jewelry piece represents and although we place extra emphasis on Autism this month it is a top priority cause for us all year long. Additionally this year we will have a team in the Autism Society of Greater Orlando’s Autism Awareness 5k walk for ASGO on May 8th inside the Orange County Convention Center ’s South Concourse.

About ASGO and Autism Awareness Month:

ASGO was founded in 1996 by a group of volunteer parents to better assist families of children and adults with autism in the Central Florida area. Everyone is encouraged to come out to support ASGO and the Central Florida families affected by autism. 100% of the proceeds will stay right in the Central Florida area. The mission or goal of ASGO is that all individuals within the autism spectrum will be provided a lifetime network of opportunities to become fully accepted, included, and actively participating members of our community, through family support, education, and advocacy, and public awareness. They are a wealth of information and support to families of children and adults with autism, offering social opportunities for individuals with autism to be included in the community. (www.asgo.org) The Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness Month since the 1970s. The United States recognizes April as a special opportunity for everyone to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community.

Established in 1999, Project Lifesaver International is a non-profit organization that is committed to helping families quickly find their loved ones who wander because of Alzheimer’s, Down syndrome, dementia, autism, and other related disorders.

Weighted Belt for Autism?

ORLANDO, Fla. — Autism strikes one in 150 children. The disorder often causes kids to be less aware of their bodies, making it difficult to navigate a room without bumping into things. Now, a new device is restoring that awareness. Some call it a miracle, while others say it isn’t a cure. Angel Diaz looks like a typical 8-year-old, but he’s come a long way. Angel has autism.
“Typical kids, they do a lot of things, but it’s more hard for us because we have to teach him in different ways,” Angel’s mom, Hilsia, explained. “They don’t learn in the same way the other kids learn.” As part of his treatment routine, Angel gets occupational therapy three times a week. During the therapy, he wears a weighted belt.

The belt causes muscles to feel tension and sends that information to the brain, helping kids become more aware of their body and feel more in control. “It is amazing, sometimes, how a little bit of weight around the waist makes a big difference in some of the children,” Sue Horwath, a pediatric physical therapist at Optimum Rehab in Lake Mary, Fla., told Ivanhoe.

The belt has made a difference for Angel. “When he’s wearing the belt, he’s much more grounded,” Donna Urbina, an occupational therapist at Optimum Rehab, explained to Ivanhoe. “He’s much more focused.” However, some experts say the belt shouldn’t be called a “miracle.” “That can be helpful to some children, but it’s not helpful for all children, and it certainly is not a miracle cure for any childhood disorder,” Leslie Gavin, Ph.D., a pediatric psychologist from Nemours Children’s Clinic in Orlando, Fla., told Ivanhoe. While it may not be a cure, Hilsia says it’s worth it. “I think everything we do with him is part of his miracle,” she said. It’s helping her son get back to being a kid. The miracle belt weighs between one and three pounds, depending on the weight of the child. It can be worn for several periods of time throughout the day. Experts typically recommend 20-30 minute sessions.

The National Autism Association (NAA) along with 12 other organizations launched a campaign this week to spur letter writing and raise awareness about dangerous restraint and seclusion practices in schools. The initiative comes on the heels of the May 19th GAO Report that revealed no federal laws regulating restraint and seclusion in schools, no laws in 19 states, and “widely divergent” laws in remaining states.

It also investigated cases where two children died from “mechanical compression to the chest” and being “smothered to death,” one died from restraint following a seizure, another died from hanging himself in a seclusion room. Other cases included a four-year-old girl who was tied to a chair and abused, five children who were duct-taped to their desks, and a ten-year-old boy who was put in a seclusion room “75 times over a 6-month period for hours at a time for offenses such as whistling, slouching and hand-waving.”

The report only adds to stories around the country of disabled children being handcuffed, locked in closets and bathrooms, and restrained with chemicals and lemon spray. “These are essentially torture tactics that are outlawed for terrorists, but children with autism and other disabilities have no federal regulations in place protecting them,” says Wendy Fournier of NAA. “We’re not speaking of all teachers – but we do need to protect children from the ones who are putting them in danger.”

This week, the group launched an ad campaign with headlines that called handcuffs “the new circle time, and “when our disabled children can’t figure out how to sit still, more schools are showing them the ropes.” They’re asking lawmakers to ban dangerous restraint and seclusion and enforce proper training, ample reporting, and better monitoring.

Empowering parents is also key. “Thanks to organizations like APRAIS and Families Against Restraint and Seclusion, parents are armed with information and can download a sample ‘no consent’ form to give to their schools,” says Rita Shreffler of NAA.
